Design Indaba 2012 – II
Finally some more interesting stuff I came across at this years Expo.. Loved the creativity from a number of upcoming and already established designers. The Buyers Preview Day made a big difference in getting to know designers – its cool to see who stands behind designs I blogged or read about and to have the time to connect.
But I must confess that some exhibitors who’s stands looked almost the same as last year didn’t really have to showcase again.. The fashion part was not really mine either, as I don’t think its necessary to give some of the local fashion designers the space of a fashion show, when all they are creating are bad rip-offs from international fashion houses..

Rock me again!
Trevor Mitchell’s clothing recycling project Rock Me Again is showcasing refashioned garments by a selected group of designers, such as Jule Visnjic, Suzaan Heyns, Clive Rundle, Stiaan Louw, Lara Klawikowski.
Since 4 years the initiative asks consumers to clear out their wardrobe and deliver unwanted clothes to ‘green bins’ at Vida e Caffes in Joburg and Cape Town. This year they collaborate with WeWood watches who plant a tree for every unwanted garment dropped in the bin!
Some of South Africa’s top creatives shot the project for film and stills, directors Chloe Coetsee, Padraic O’Meara, Andy Lund and photographer Brett Rubin. After a successful event in Joburg last weekend, tomorrow its Capetownians who will have the privilege to be a part of it. I’m very excited to see what they created this time!

Mohair
Thinking of my friends in Europe and everyone living in the Northern Hemisphere, experiencing winter right now.. Actually missing a real Winter and still can’t get used to the thought of celebrating Christmas in Summer 5 years down the line..
Here is something to warm you up a little!
In the global contest, Port Elizabeth plays a pivotal role, as the Eastern Cape produces 75% of South Africa’s mohair production; most of the rest of the world’s production is imported to South Africa, resulting in 95% of the world’s mohair being exported via the Port Elizabeth harbour, affording Port Elizabeth the title of “Mohair Capital of the World”.
A natural Eco-friendly fibre
Angora goats are shorn twice a year and are not harmed in any way during the process. In the pursuit of perfection, their fleece has been refined through consistently high breeding standards and meticulous genetic selection.
Angora goats thrive in the Karoo, with its combination of hot, dry summers, cold winters and semi-desert vegetation.
This combination of best practice farming and best environment for Angora goats has set South Africa apart. South African mohair is globally acknowledged as one of the finest natural fibres money can buy. The added beauty of mohair is that it is a renewable, natural resource, providing a sustainable production chain between animal and human, while contributing long-term prosperity to the Karoo region.
