Balkanology
It amuses me positively how big the Balkanology parties are in South Africa. Growing up in Croatia myself (which used to be part of Yugoslavia) the Balkan/Gipsy music was a part of my childhood. But living here now it is a fun event to go to and its funny to see how much everyone loves the music and vibe. The organizers are doing a great job in making it authentic by introducing different Balkan countries, music and traditions.
Most people know of the movie maker Emir Kusturica and have watched at least one of his prize-winning movies: When father was away on business (1985), Time of the gypsies (1989), Arizona dream (1993), Underground (1995), Black cat, white cat (1998) in which he’s showing a stereotypical life of Balkans and deals with stories of peace and war in his own controversial way.
As for Balkanology people enjoy the wild and dark side of the Balkan way of celebrating, they make an effort by dressing up inspired by the movies they’ve seen. Upcoming events are in Johannesburg (11th June) and Cape Town (15th June)…be sure not to miss it!
